Visions of Vietnam

These are stories of people I knew who served in Vietnam, friends, classmates, relatives.  So many stories, so many lives changed forever.  Their sacrifice is beyond measure, we owe them a huge debt.
Remembering all who served.

 Visions of Vietnam

Just a young kid from the Midwest, he had never traveled far
But when his Uncle Sam called him, he headed off to war
He was taught to love his country and to obey the Golden Rule
But the lessons of a cruel war, were never taught in school.
His peaceful life was shattered, feelings he could not explain
He turned to the bottle, trying to erase the pain
He came home to his family but was lost to alcohol
He died long ago in Vietnam but you won’t find his name on The Wall

His partner won the coin toss and it was just his luck
His buddy stayed there with the bomb as he walked back for the truck
When he heard the explosion, he knew he would be too late
He would always remember, that could have been his fate
He never forgot his fellow soldier; how he bravely gave his all
The name of his buddy is now carved in the granite of The Wall

Raised on a Ozark farm but how he dearly loved to fly
Piloting a Super Sabre jet as it streaked across the sky
It was only his third mission when the enemy shot him down
They found his lifeless body in the wreckage on the ground
Old memories are fading and how many now recall
The story of this hero whose name’s forever written on The Wall

He flew his Huey chopper rescuing the injured and the maimed
Dodging bullets in the battle, his life would never be the same
He still hears the desperate cries, of those he had to leave behind
The horrors that he witnessed will forever prey upon his mind
These grim scenes are revisited every evening at nightfall
Names of those he couldn’t save; engraved in their memory on The Wall

His young son watched the evening news, on their TV each night
If he didn’t hear his daddy’s name then he must be all right
It’s not easy raising little ones, when their dad’s so far way
But she prayed for him daily and for his safe return one day
Families waiting back at home, dreading they might get the call
So many lives are memories etched in the black granite of The Wall

Seasons

seasonsSeasons

There is a season of fun and laughter
Carefree days when dreams are new
Of looking forward to a future

When life is good and troubles few

There is a season of beginnings
A time to work, a time to sow
When we learn of loss and winnings

That there are times of ebb and flow

A time to find that special someone
The one true love, that’s genuine
Ending happily ever after

When two hearts become entwined

After summer comes the autumn
What we’ve sown we now shall reap
A time to gather close our love ones

When we cherish what we keep

There is a season of forgiveness
A time to mend, old wounds to heal
When we learn what is important

What is fake and what is real

Then at last comes the winter
Old bones feel the icy chill
But a new world is waiting for us

Heaven lies beyond the hill

Winter’s Deception

Ice storm

WINTER’S DECEPTION

Craggy brown branches each glitter and dances
in a lovely glass encased scene
Prisms of ice, shine and entice
as the sun rays glisten and gleam
Trees covered in crystal, sounds like a pistol
as limbs crack and crash to the ground
Like chandeliers twinkling, sparkling and tinkling
the ice makes a melodious sound
This wonder of nature, belies the danger
this surreal landscape displays
Broken tree branches, lost power and car crashes
make us long for the warmth of spring days

When the Angels Came to Earth

This is a wonderful Christmas story that Mom has written. I believe that it would make a fantastic children’s book. I just wish I knew how to make that happen. Anyway, please enjoy it and maybe read it to your kids this Christmas Eve. -Leah

When the Angels Came to Earth

Now this is the story of a very special birth
And a night of miracles when the angels came to earth
It happened many years ago in a village far away
What occurred one special night still amazes me today
My mother had asked God for a son and He sent her me
Matthew means gift from God, so Matthew I would be
But I was born imperfect and this would be my lot
What God had given others, for me he had forgot
Since birth I had been mute, so a word I could not speak
The children all made fun of me, and thought that I was weak
I longed to be like others and talk and laugh and play
But I was too ashamed so I would run away.
I stayed with the shepherds and helped them herd the sheep
The lambs were my playmates and my secret they would keep
Then a strange thing happened one peaceful starry night
As angels appeared to us and bathed the fields in light
The angels were so beautiful and we were so amazed
Their brilliance almost blinded us as we watched in a daze
They told us not to fear them as we trembled on the earth
But on that night in Bethlehem a girl had given birth
To a wee babe in a stable, and we should go and see
But someone had to watch the sheep and that chore fell to me
But as the shepherds rushed away, an angel lingered near
He knew my heart was broken as he saw me shed a tear
He said because of God’s great gift, this night I would be whole
And it would be my destiny to make sure the story’s told
He told me men aren’t perfect, that’s why on this night
God had sent his only son, to earth to make things right
That he had come to teach all people, even you and me
That we should treat each person, as we would want to be
When the Angel knelt and prayed with me, I knew that I had found
My voice that had been locked away, I heard the clear sweet sound
Then they took me to the stable where baby Jesus lay
And I sang to him a lullaby while I knelt down on the hay
Then I was joined by angels and I sang with all my might
The silent sky was filled with song that first Christmas night
It was a night of miracles, the night of Jesus’ birth
When the star shown over Bethlehem and Angels came to earth.

The Christmas Visitor

The Christmas Visitor

It was deep down in November and I was dreading the cold December
With the all the frantic shopping and the stress
Thinking back to childhood days and the slow and simpler ways
I wondered how we ever got into this mess
Then as I lay there napping I was awakened by a tapping
And I quickly rose up from my cozy bed
As I saw the apparition all dressed in fur and crimson
And it filled me with anxiety and dread
Groggy from a fitful slumber, I stared in awe and wonder
As this vision appeared before my eyes
Was this just my imagination or a weird hallucination
But the visitor looked so kind and wise
So with some trepidation and a bit of fascination
I questioned if he were real or just a dream
As he slowly took a chair, he seemed without a care
His twinkling eyes had a special gleam
He said, “I am the Christmas Spirit” and I should not dread or fear it
But share with all the age old Christmas story
When God’s intervening, gave each life a special meaning
On that day he sent his Son to earth from Glory
It’s not about the gifts we’re giving but the way we each are living
And the love we share with one another
It’s not about the stress and excess but the meaning of forgiveness,
And imparting God’s gift of love to each other.
As I saw it start to snow, he then calmly rose to go
But he paused, knelt and bowed his head
He said a prayer for those on earth and thanked God for Jesus birth
And my heart was no longer filled with dread
Now I will embrace the Christmas season and not forget the reason
We celebrate his birth this time each year
I will share this gift of love that God sent from up above
And wish one and all glad tidings and good cheer.

Have a Blessed Christmas
