The Old Kitchen Table

THE OLD KITCHEN TABLE

Our kitchen table is where so much has taken place in our home through the years. We planned trips, discussed world events, talked about problems, celebrated birthdays, Thanksgiving, Christmas and other holidays and gave thanks to God; it was the center of our family life. For 5 generations this has been the case and I wrote this poem after hearing all the stories my husband has told of his life growing up on our farm. and including some of our family life together.

With the smells of breakfast in the air, we ran to find our place
And gathered there at the evening meal bowing to say grace
Where mother rolled her crust for pies and taught us how to cook
In evening by a coal oil lamp she’d read to us a book
A place for coffee with your neighbor whenever he dropped in
Or an abundant feast at harvest time to feed the hungry men
It was the center of our world where we were loved and fed
A place we knew we could return and gather to break bread
But time did pass and we grew up and went out on our own
But we were always welcomed around the table back at home
We’d come back on holidays and sit and reminisce
On memories of our childhood and the good times that we missed
How on summer nights we’d sleep outdoors beneath the stars and dream
We’d play and hunt in the woods and go floating down our stream
Of winter days, the old wood stove and sledding in the snow
Old cars we’d had that wouldn’t run and how time then passed so slow
Of handmade quilts and feather beds and family get-togethers
Watching the sky from the porch as we saw the storm clouds gather
The summer days and swimming holes and not having to lock doors
Of music parties, the one room school and walks to the country store
Our dad and mom have left this earth and our children are all grown
Now they have fond memories of their youthful years and home
Of summer days, firework displays of trips and going fishin’
And they reminisce when they come home around the table in our kitchen

A Poem for Veterans – A European Tour

vetpos87

A European Tour
(An Old Soldier’s Story)

He sat on the old park bench as people passed him by
No one stopped to talk to him or even just say, Hi

They could never realize the places he had seen
And never could envision his life at age eighteen

He saw the Cliffs of Dover and even crossed the Rhine
He visited Paris, France but not to taste the wine

A farm boy from the Midwest went off to fight a war
And his heroic story we should not ignore

At the Battle of the Bulge he caught shrapnel in the thigh
At the bridge at Remagen he saw his buddy die

The nightmare of Dachau upon his mind still preys
Visions of these horrors still visit him today

His eyes are dimmed and clouded but the memories are still alive
As he remembers buddies, those who did not survive

He never got to see Big Ben or hear it strike the hour
Never got to tour the Louvre or climb the Eiffel Tower

He made the world a safer place, so we could all be free
Now we can travel and see the sights he never got to see

I Cry for My Country

I Cry for My Country

I cry for my country this land that I love
Founded by patriots and blessed from above
The Star Spangled Banner brings a tear to my eye
My heart fills with pride when our flag passes by
I stand for our anthem and bow to my God
For our soldiers and veterans, I’m grateful and awed
For their service I’m thankful and their brave sacrifice
Our country is free because they paid the price
Our constitution and freedoms are in danger and peril
They now want our guns, lock, stock and barrel
Christians are told when and where we can pray
Freedom of religion is now a cliche
They mock us as backwards, our beliefs are just horrible
We’re dumped in a basket, they call us deplorable
They say that we cling to our guns and religion
That our cherished freedoms are not our decision
From ocean to ocean to great mountains and plains
God’s given us sunshine along with the rain
He’s stood by us through hard times, wars and attacks
But to God, our great nation has now turned it’s back
I pray America will turn from evil and sin
And God in his mercy will bless us again

A Country Autumn

img_4535texture-rs

A Country Autumn

Across earth’s canvas an unseen hand repaints the realm of trees and land

The summer green of emerald hue is now a more eclectic view

Patchworks of scarlet, bronze and gold, the vivid colors now unfold

With autumn’s breath, leaves descend, signaling the summer’s end

Quilting a shawl upon the earth, preparing for spring’s rebirth

A chevron of geese with feral cry, soar southerly across the sky

Squirrels scamper sprightly through the grass gathering their winter cache

Persimmons’ pucker is replaced as frost gives them a sweeter taste

Pumpkins, gourds and bittersweet now decorate our fall retreat

With harvest done at end of day a grateful farmer stops to pray

Autumn comes at God’s behest and we on earth are richly blessed

Lady Liberty’s Still Standing and Stairway to Heaven

These are the first two poems Sue wrote in the first days after 9/11.  Lest we forget.

LADY LIBERTY’S STILL STANDING

She’s still standing in the harbor as she has for all these years

But if you look more closely, you might see the tears.

She cries for all her loved ones, which were killed, behind her back,

By evil men who used her people in their diabolical attack.

As blood ran down the towers and mingled with the dust

America grew stronger, we believe in God We Trust

We have not been defeated, our resolve is stronger still

Lady Liberty is not bowing and she never will

Her torch lights the path to freedom, as Americans resolve

We are one nation, indivisible, united under God

Our nation is in mourning but she’s not dressed in black,

The colors of Old Glory cover the wounds of the attack

These towers reached to Heaven for the many who were lost

Let us vow to route this evil, no matter what the cost.

The eagle’s poised for take off, her wings spread across our land,

Her talons hold the weapons for the battle that’s at hand.

With hearts that have been broken, we have become more strong

As people come together and vow to right this wrong.

We pray to God for guidance as he watches from above

Please God, Bless America, the land that we love.

Stairway to Heaven

They were on their way to Heaven as they hurried up the stairs,

Not only were they heroes, they were angels unaware.

Just going about their duties as they had so many times before

Little did they realize they were soldiers in a war.

As the victims fled the buildings on that tragic fateful day

These brave men hurried past them with no thought to harm’s way

We can hear the bagpipes clearly as they play Amazing Grace

In salute to fallen comrades who are in a better place

We can see their fearless faces as up those stairs they trod

Right into the gates of Heaven and before the throne of God
