THE FIRST NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS

‘Twas the night before Christmas but I couldn’t sleep
I was out in the fields guarding the sheep
When what to my weary eyes should appear
But an angel in white, saying, “Don’t fear.”
“I have a message to bring you, a message of joy
Tomorrow God’s sending a wee baby boy
He could come as a King; you know that He’s able
But He’s sending His Son to be born in a stable”
I called to the others to wake from their slumber
And told them the story with awe and with wonder
They thought I was dreaming but I knew I was right
And the angel returned the very next night
He said the Child had been born in Bethlehem town
We knelt there and trembled as God’s glory shone round
Then a Heavenly choir joined the angel on earth
Singing praises to God of our dear Savior’s birth
We rushed to the stable and there in the hay
As the angel had told us, the wee Baby lay
But we didn’t know then what lay ahead
The cross and the nails and the thorns on His head
But He knew and agreed to pay the ultimate price
For the sins we committed, His life sacrificed
He showed us that death was not the end of the story
If we asked for forgiveness we could meet Him in glory
I still remember that night and the Gift that was given
When God came to earth so we might all go to Heaven
